GOKUMI word is my ongoing collaboration with acclaimed Afghani poet, Reza Mohammadi. Our premiere concert at St. Ethelburga's in Central London was a great success, with Reza narrowly escaping the recent Taliban takeover of Afghanistan to present his work in an especially poignant performance. An examination of language and syntax in Farsi, this project takes the traditional Persian technique of basing music on the rhythm of ancient poetry and extends it into materials drawn from transcriptions pitch, texture, timbre and rhythm of Reza’s recitation, with musicians playing both written material and improvising on fragments from these transcriptions.
